Trisandhya Vyapini, the goddess who preside over dawn, noon, and dusk hours of the day, is Jagadhatri. One of the famous northern goddesses, Goddess Jagaddhatri, was a favourite of Maharaja Krishna Chandra of Krishna Nagar, West Bengal. Vedic people would do Jagadhatri Puja and Homam on the auspicious day of Akshaya Navami, which is observed on Shukla Navami during the Kartik month (October-November). It is also known as Satya Yugadi, the day the Satya Yuga started, and Amla Navami, the day the Amla tree is revered. In West Bengal, where the Goddess of Power, Jagadhatri, is worshipped for her profusion of favours, this day is commemorated as Jagadhatri Puja.

This year, Durga Puja will be observed from October 31 until November 3, 2022. Despite the celebration lasting 10 days, Durga Puja is only performed on the ninth day; Saptami, Ashtami, Navami, and Dashami follow the first five. During the Durga Puja festival, people congregate, dress up, and petition Goddess Durga for favours. It is a festival of joy and happiness and serves as a reminder that good always wins over evil.

Jagadhatri Legends and Significance

Goddess Jagadhatri is one of Goddess Durga’s incarnations. Devi appears as the ten-handed Goddess Durga in the months of September and October on the Shukla Paksha Navami of Ashwin. Devi Jagadhatri, the loving mother who holds the globe, makes an appearance a month later, in the months of October and November.

Jagadhatri Puja is one of the primary holidays celebrated in the Kartik month, along with Durga, Laxmi, and Kali Puja. Devotees worship and commemorate the goddess Durga’s rebirth under the name of Jagadhatri, creating a stunning ambiance brimming with happy energy.

Jagaddhatri is another name Durga. In Sanskrit, Bengali, and Assamese, the word “Jagaddhatri” literally translates to “Holder (dhatri) of the World (Jagat)”. The devotion of Goddess Jagadhatri comes directly from Tantra, where she is a symbol of sattva as well as Durga and Kali, who stand for Rajas and Tamas, respectively, and other attributes.

In the imagery, the goddess is shown carrying a conch, discus, shaft, and bow in each of her four hands. A snake-adorned holy thread is what she is wearing. The dead elephant demon Karindrasura, which stands for the gods’ ego being crushed, is where she is positioned. Because they believed she had vanquished the demon Mahishasura with their weapons, the gods became arrogant and egotistical.

She assumed the shape of Jagadhatri to instil in them a feeling of humility and to make them aware of her total control. The goddess is also said to be a cross between Durga and Mother Bhuvaneshwari.

In verse 173 of the Lalitha Sahasranamam, Goddess Lalitha Tripura Sundari is referred to as “Jagadhatri Vishvamaataa Jagaddhatri Vishaalaakshi Viraagini Pragalbhaa Paramodaaraa Paraamodaa Manomayi Vishvamaataa.”

Jagadhatri Puja 2022 Rituals

In honour of “Mahalaya,” the Goddess Durga is welcomed to visit Earth for a week. Everyone’s attention is focused on the god idol, also known as Chokkhu Daan.

On the first day, a large, beautifully made statue of Maa Durga is installed on adorned podiums all throughout the city, the worship space in houses is purified, and a Kalash is set up as a symbol of the goddess. After the idol is placed, a ceremony is held on Saptami to honour her sanctity. This is known as Pran Pratishthan.

Since it is washed in the adjacent river while dressed in a sari, the small banana plant known as Kola Bou (banana bride) is thought to have the ability to absorb the power and sanctity of deities. The goddess is worshipped in the guise of a virgin girl in the ceremony known as Kumari Puja, which is carried out on Ashtami to maintain the purity of the feminine spirit and its dissemination throughout society.

On the final day of Puja, when the Goddess leaves for her husband’s home, the idol is brought outdoors for immersion. Every married lady daubs herself with marriage, reproduction, and motherhood while offering Maa Durga crimson incense (Sindoor).

Depending on the Bengali calendar, the festival of Jagaddhatri Puja is lavishly observed on the ninth day of the lunar fortnight in the months of Kartik or November. This year’s celebrations are scheduled on November 2. On this day, verses from the holy book Chandi are chanted before the goddess’ image is drowned, same like during Durga Puja. When followers gather to worship Jagadhatri Devi, the same rites used for Durga puja are carried out, with the exception of “Badhan.” The Saptami, Astami, and Navami pujas are typically held on Navami Tithi.

One of the places in Delhi where it is observed is New Delhi Kali Bari, the centre of Bengali arts and culture. With Jagadhatri Puja, the Hindu holidays come to a conclusion for the year. Once more, followers start the countdown to the oncoming Christmas season. Toward the end of the event, a big rally is marched through the city so that attendees may see it.
