UGA Football History

The University of Georgia’s football team was the first team of its sort in the Deep South when it was founded in January 1892. The University of Georgia’s gridiron teams saw ups and downs during the next 25 years until the United States’ entry into World War I in April 1917 temporarily put a stop to the football programme. The teams had to overcome tragedy and adversity in order to make Georgia a football force.

Tragic events occurred in the Georgia programme in 1897, and as a result, Georgia came perilously near to outlawing football. Von Gammon’s premature death cast a pall over the university’s football programme for the rest of the 1890s and into the 1900s. Despite these difficulties, the players’ unshakable loyalty and passion to the team allowed Georgia to sustain its programme over these years.

Georgia’s football program’s fortunes started to improve when Steadman Sanford moved there in 1903 to accept a job as a professor of English literature. Sanford started serving as the school’s sports programmes’ faculty advisor in 1907. The club had been primarily underachieving since the late 1890s, and Alex Cunningham’s coaching tenure marked the first in Georgia to endure longer than two years. Cunningham’s accomplishments as a coach enabled the team to emerge from its rut.

The University of Georgia came to the decision that it would be prudent to place its athletics programmes on an extended pause for the duration of the war when the United States entered the First World War in April 1917. Following this time, the Georgia football programme firmly established itself as a dominant force in the region. There was a resurgence of interest in the sport on campus and among alumni as the programme emerged from the decline it had been in from the late 1890s and into the 1900s.
